At home, pizza has long been tired of perverse variations on the theme of the saint. Italians shouted to the whole world that there was no place for pizza in pineapples, anchovies, mayonnaise, potatoes, and strawberries. The nation decided to act differently: they demanded that UNESCO recognize pizza as a world heritage in order to preserve the original Neapolitan recipe.
The original pizza, in addition to dough, included only tomatoes and cheese, but everyone wanted to add something from themselves to this simple perfection. So there were a thousand and one pizza recipes with all possible additives.
Pineapples got the most popular hatred: disputes reached proposals in some countries to ban pizza with pineapples at the legislative level.
But there is a limit to everything, and the Italian association of agricultural producers Coldiretti decided to take real action. The association decided to fight “culinary piracy” by initiating a petition to defend UNESCO’s original recipe. The petition was signed by more than 2 million people.
On December 6, at a meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in South Korea, it was decided to include the art of Neapolitan pizza in the list of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind. This was announced on Twitter by the Italian Minister of Agriculture Maurizio Martina.
The Italians greeted this news as a victory, to which they had been going 250 years. Pizzaiolo staged demonstrations in the streets and treated people to pizza.
Congratulations to Italy and order pizza according to the original Neapolitan recipe.
